Category: media > books | Merchant: Walmart US This book uses an active learning approach to the topic of digital signal processing (DSP) . DSP is a fundamental technology with wide ranging applications as, for example, digital downloads of movies, mobile and broadband communications, digital television, and many other areas. In this book the subject is taught using a "hands-on" experimental approach with MATLAB examples throughout the text to illustrate the mathematical concepts and DSP algorithms developed and explained. Existing books in this area tends to fall into one of two camps - either a highly mathematical treatment with few practical examples of the everyday uses of DSP, or else very verbose and descriptive treatments with little or no mathematical content to back up the topics. The former type of text is excellent as a standard reference, but poor as a learning vehicle. The latter type of text is good for general knowledge, but fails to meet the needs of University students and practicing industry professionals. Students need a learn-by-doing approach, and industry professionals need to come up to speed as rapidly as possible. The book uses MATLAB throughout, inn an established industry and University programming environment. Furthermore, it requires that the reader only have access to the Student/Educational version of MATLAB, not the full commercial version, which is out of reach of most students.

Category: media > books | Merchant: Walmart US In this supplementary text, MATLAB is used as a computing tool to explore traditional DSP topics and solve problems to gain insight. This greatly expands the range and complexity of problems that students can effectively study in the course. Since DSP applications are primarily algorithms implemented on a DSP processor or software, a fair amount of programming is required. Using interactive software such as MATLAB makes it possible to place more emphasis on learning new and difficult concepts than on programming algorithms. Interesting practical examples are discussed and useful problems are explored.

Often WT systems employ the discrete wavelet transform, implemented on a digital signal processor. However, in ultra low-power applications such as biomedical implantable devices, it is not suitable to implement the WT by means of digital circuitry due to the relatively high power consumption associated with the required A/D converter. Low-power analog realization of the wavelet transform enables its application in vivo, e.g. in pacemakers, where the wavelet transform provides a means to extremely reliable cardiac signal detection. In Ultra Low-Power Biomedical Signal Processing we present a novel method for implementing signal processing based on WT in an analog way. The methodology presented focuses on the development of ultra low-power analog integrated circuits that implement the required signal processing, taking into account the limitations imposed by an implantable device.

Category: media > books | Merchant: Walmart US Digital Signal Processing in Power System Protection and Control" bridges the gap between the theory of protection and control and the practical applications of protection equipment. Understanding how protection functions is crucial not only for equipment developers and manufacturers, but also for their users who need to install, set and operate the protection devices in an appropriate manner. After introductory chapters related to protection technology and functions, "Digital Signal Processing in Power System Protection and Control" presents the digital algorithms for signal filtering, followed by measurement algorithms of the most commonly-used protection criteria values and decision-making methods in protective relays. A large part of the book is devoted to the basic theory and applications of artificial intelligence techniques for protection and control. Fuzzy logic based schemes, artificial neural networks, expert systems and genetic algorithms with their advantages and drawbacks are discussed. AI techniques are compared and it is also shown how they can be combined to eliminate the disadvantages and magnify the useful features of particular techniques. The information provided in "Digital Signal Processing in Power System Protection and Control" can be useful for protection engineers working in utilities at various levels of the electricity network, as well as for students of electrical engineering, especially electrical power engineering. It may also be helpful for other readers who want to get acquainted with and to apply the filtering, measuring and decision-making algorithms for purposes other than protection and control, everywhere fast and on-line signal analysis is needed for proper functioning of the apparatus.

DSP is utilized in just about every electronic system or device. DSP is taking one piece of information be it data, image, video, or audio, most likely compressing, sending, and filtering it to another location within your application to appear in the form of a document, picture or video. Like Smith before it, this book is different to most on the market by following a popular applied approach to this tricky subject, and will be the perfect starting point for engineers who need to get into DSP from the ground floor. This book starts with the absolute basics of this integral process. No experience is expected and with no prior knowledge taken for granted, a refresher chapter on complex numbers and trigonometry can be found at the very beginning of the material. Real-world worked examples, reference designs, and tools - including online applets that enable readers to visualize key principles - complete a package that will help engineers who that needs to learn anew or refresh their memory on this essential technology as they move to projects that require DSP familiarity. Dismayed when presented with a mass of equations as an explanation of DSP? This is the book for you Clear examples and a non-mathematical approach gets you up to speed with DSP Includes an overview of the DSP functions and implementation used in typical DSP-intensive applications, including error correction, CDMA mobile communication, and radar systems

The rapid increase in computing power and communication speed, coupled with computer storage facilities availability, has led to a new age of multimedia applications. Multimedia is practically everywhere and all around us we can feel its presence in almost all applications ranging from online video databases, IPTV, interactive multimedia and more recently in multimedia based social interaction. These new growing applications require high-quality data storage, easy access to multimedia content and reliable delivery. Moving ever closer to commercial deployment also aroused a higher awareness of security and intellectual property management issues. All the aforementioned requirements resulted in higher demands on various areas of research (signal processing, image/video processing and analysis, communication protocols, content search, watermarking, etc.) . This book covers the most prominent research issues in multimedia and is divided into four main sections: i) content based retrieval, ii) storage and remote access, iii) watermarking and copyright protection and iv) multimedia applications.

Master the basic concepts and methodologies of digital signal processing with this systematic introduction, without the need for an extensive mathematical background. The authors lead the reader through the fundamental mathematical principles underlying the operation of key signal processing techniques, providing simple arguments and cases rather than detailed general proofs. Coverage of practical implementation, discussion of the limitations of particular methods and plentiful MATLAB illustrations allow readers to better connect theory and practice. A focus on algorithms that are of theoretical importance or useful in real-world applications ensures that students cover material relevant to engineering practice, and equips students and practitioners alike with the basic principles necessary to apply DSP techniques to a variety of applications. Chapters include worked examples, problems and computer experiments, helping students to absorb the material they have just read. Lecture slides for all figures and solutions to the numerous problems are available to instructors.
